Abyssinians

The Abyssinian is one of the oldest known breeds of pedigree cat. In appearance, Abyssinians resemble the paintings and sculptures of ancient Egyptian cats with a muscular body, stunning arched neck, large ears with almond shaped eyes.

The Abyssinian cat is said to have descended from a cat called Zula, brought to England by Captain Barrett Leonard at the conclusion of the Abyssinian war. They were first exhibited at Crystal Palace in 1871 so it is certain that all Abyssinians are descended from cats bred in the United Kingdom.

Abyssinian cats have lively personalities showing interest in all that is going on around them. They are very "people oriented". They enjoy being with their owners and are very intelligent and affectionate. Abyssinian owners greatly enjoy the loyal temperament of this cat and it is hard not to agree that there is something quite unique about them.

The Abyssinian comes in several colours, Usual (known as ruddy in the USA), Sorrel (red in the USA), Fawn and Blue are the most widely accepted colours in the UK. There are actually 28 colours and coat variations recognised by the GCCF including all of the above in silver versions.
